FIELD NOTE 01

Oasis between mountains

Principal growing areas are located between the Famatina and Velasco mountain ranges. Although the environment is warm with little rainfall, elevation and nighttime cooling at each site play important roles. Next, we focus on differences between the valleys, including Chilecito, Aminga, and Chañarmuyo.

FIELD NOTE 02

Torrontés Riojano

This variety is central to understanding the region. While it has bright floral and citrus aromas, the amount of residual sugar cannot be determined by aroma alone. Comparing it to the same variety from Cafayate, observe specific aspects such as fruit ripeness, acidity, and bitterness on the palate.

FIELD NOTE 03

Include reds in regional profiles, too.

Malbec, Bonarda, Cabernet, Syrah, and others are also produced. After learning the main white varieties, add the reds so the region is not limited to a single style. It is also important not to confuse La Rioja Argentina on the label with Spain’s Rioja.
