Madeira’s black grape variety
Tinta Negra is the main black grape variety on Madeira Island, widely used for fortified wine there. Wines of Portugal also describes its use in non-fortified wines from Madeira. Do not base your idea of the wine only on the grape variety listed; check the bottle type first.
Corresponds to four sweetness/dryness levels.
Madeira Wine Company explains that Tinta Negra can be used to make all four sweet/dry styles of Madeira. Knowledge that associates Sercial with dryness and Verdelho with off-dry should not be simply applied to this variety. Check sweetness/dryness indications separately from the grape variety field.
Even black varieties can’t be read by color alone
Tinta Negra berries show a wide color range, and maturation as Madeira also influences wine appearance. Do not infer a sweet style or high quality from a deep color alone; keep grape, sweetness, and aging indications distinct. By comparing two bottles of different sweetness levels, you learn that the winemaking method alters the result even from the same base material.

What are the sweetness levels of Madeira made from Tinta Negra?
Madeira Wine Company explains that Tinta Negra may be used for all four sweetness levels in Madeira. Therefore, confirming the grape variety alone does not determine the sweetness. When drinking a bottle, check the sweetness/dryness designation and compare different styles of the same grape.
How is Tinta Negra classified as a grape variety?
Wines of Portugal introduces Tinta Negra as a red grape variety. However, you cannot determine the appearance or sweetness/dryness of matured Madeira only from the grape’s skin color. It is necessary to distinguish between classifying the raw grape and observing the finished wine.
How to find out the maturation period?
Neither grape variety nor dryness/sweetness directly indicate how many years that bottle was aged. Check for separate maturity statements or producer information. In comparison, record grape variety, dryness/sweetness, and years as independent items to avoid mixing conditions.
