Chardonnay and Riesling
Shinano Riesling, introduced by Manns Wines, is a hybrid variety with Chardonnay as the mother and Riesling as the father. It was registered as a grape variety in 1991. It is a single variety grown in the vineyard, not a designation for a blend of the two grapes in the wine.
Lion has a different second parent.
Riesling Lion is a cross of Riesling and Koshu Sanjaku. Although both it and Shinano Riesling share Riesling as a parent, they are different varieties. When comparing Japanese-developed whites, do not group solely by name; check the parentage of hybrids.
Used for both dry and sweet styles.
Manns Wines explains that they use Shinano Riesling for both dry and sweet wines. Fruity aroma alone does not determine residual sugar. Even for two bottles of the same variety, check and compare the sweetness and vinification of each product.
