FIELD NOTE 01

Along the Olifants River

In the Olifants River area, securing water to supplement limited rainfall and managing the canopy to protect fruit are important. In contrast, areas near the west coast and the highlands of Cederberg have different conditions. Do not assume moving north always means getting hotter.

FIELD NOTE 02

Klein Karoo

Klein Karoo, surrounded by mountains, has a history of sweet and fortified wines. Note place names like Calitzdorp and distinguish Muscat types and the grape varieties used for ports. There are also dry reds and whites; the region name does not determine residual sugar levels.

FIELD NOTE 03

Orange River in the Northern Cape

In the Northern Cape, water from the Orange River supports viticulture. Protecting grape bunches from strong sunlight using trellis and foliage is also important. Unlike the sea breezes of the Western Cape, rivers, water management, and canopy roles are notes to add.
