FIELD NOTE 01

Yarra’s terrain

In the Yarra Valley, factors such as elevation, slope orientation, and soil create differences within the region. Chardonnay and Pinot Noir are the main focus, but there are also Cabernet and Shiraz. Being a cool-climate region does not mean only early-ripening varieties can be grown.

FIELD NOTE 02

Seas of the peninsula

The Mornington Peninsula is surrounded by ocean and strongly influenced by maritime winds. The key varieties are Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Pinot Gris/Grigio. Even within the peninsula, elevation, orientation, and exposure to prevailing winds create different conditions.

FIELD NOTE 03

Compare using the same grape variety.

When comparing Pinots from two regions, check sources for vintage, whole cluster usage, extraction, and new/old barrel use. Don't attribute all differences to climate—consider producer choices. In the same state, the inland area of Rasaglen is also notable, which connects to fortified wine articles.
